THE ® AKY^ERSITY. BRIGHAM UTAH
Introduction
The first two registers of St. Nicholas’s Church, Liverpool, covering the period to 1704 when a second parish (St. Peter’s) was created, were published by the Society in 1909 as volume 35 of its series. The editor was Henry Peet (1856-1938) a well-known local historian (Trans. Hist. Soc. Lancs. & Ches., 1938, 90. 211).
The third register, the majority of which is now printed, consists of parchment pages eight inches wide by nineteen inches high, bound in calf-covered boards. The spine is lettered: ‘'3/Baptisms 7 March 1705-12 March 1730/Marriages 10 April 1705-24 March 1730/Burials 26 March 1705-22 March 1730.” In addition to these records, it contains two contem- porary indexes to the marriages, titled respectively " The Male Department ” and " The Female Department.” The book is generally in good condition but the early pages have suffered somewhat from rubbing ; it is deposited in the Liver- pool Record Office. The portion now printed finishes at the end of 1725 because the local support that was expected to cover the cost of printing the remaining five years, was not forthcoming.
The transcript was made by Miss Eveline Saxton, for many years in charge of the local history department of the Liverpool Public Library. Her death on January 8th 1962 deprived the Society of an able editor whose local knowledge would have added greatly to the value of this publication.
The present editor has corrected one or two misreadings, added several entries which had been omitted and inserted the more usual abbreviations, but has left unaltered minor changes in style and inconsistencies, for example, where occasionally modern spellings of place names have been used instead of the original ones. The Bishop’s Transcripts, which were considered unlikely to yield anything new, have not been examined.
The twenty-one years covered by this volume are interest- ing ones in the history of Liverpool. The town was growing rapidly and although only made separate from the parish of Walton-on-the-Hdl in 1699 (10 & 11 Will. Ill, c.36) a second church was authorised at the same time. The new church, dedicated to St. Peter, was consecrated in 1704 and had equal status with the old church, the two incumbents being joint Rectors of Liverpool. Growth, however, was such that authority to buUd a third church was obtained in 1715 (1 Geo. I, C.21). Building began in 1726 and the building, dedicated to St. George, was consecrated in 1734. The growth depended on two factors, the establishment of the town as a seaport and as a mercantile centre. The third index shows how large a proportion of Liverpool’s inhabitants were either merchants or connected in some way with the sea, directly as sailors or indirectly as ship builders and makers of ancillary equipment such as ropes, sails, anchors and the like. Agricultural workers were only a small minority of the parishioners.
Among the persons encountered may be mentioned Sir Thomas Johnson, who died a bankrupt in 1728, but is still commemorated by Sir Thomas Street, Bryan Blundell, who founded the Bluecoat School, one of Liverpool’s few remaining archetectural gems, the Clayton family whose marriage alli- ances are commemorated by the^ names of streets radiating from Clayton Square, and others too numerous to mention indiv'idually. The register records three girls with the given name Victoria (Hartley, Low and Ward). Although the name
VI
became popular after the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, it is most unusual before that time. The fact of its occurrence in Liverpool in the early eighteenth century was considered worthy of note by the compiler of The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names (2nd ed. 1953).
The place names do not call for comment except for the suggestion they give that the relatively few streets must have resulted in much overcrowding. The editor suggests that Owston (page 26) is probably his native place, Ulverston. Local dialect pronounces it Oostan, which is not too far removed from Owston to render this hypothesis likely.
Among the trades and occupations the numerous customs and excise officials are notable. The beginnings of Liverpool’s soap, sugar and tobacco industries are also indicated. A few puzzles remain for solution : what was a bedlate weaver, a pal : labourer or a Howard of Townfield ? What was meant by the burial of Mabel Sanderson of Hackins Hey " by post ”?
The Society is grateful to the British Academy for a grant towards the cost of printing this volume, to the Reverend Canon G. C. C. Pepys, Rector of Liverpool, for permission to publish, and to the staff of the Liverpool Record Office for their help and assistance in various ways.
